If you go to the Mapex site, they have sound sample of each of their drums. You'll be able to listen to the Meridian and the Saturn side by side, in what one have to assume be the same kind of recording environement. Hope it helps.

The Saturn will come with an additionnal $200 bucks (roughly) of Remo heads, wich should also be accounted for.

If you have the money to buy the Saturn, I would say go for the higher quality drum. But as other stated, make sure you save money to buy decent cymbals.

To be honest with you guys, I can barly tell the different in sound from the video clips of the Saturn and Meridian. Maybe I don't know what to listen for but the two kits are almost the same to me.

I listened back and forth several times myself. Since they appeared to be at the same show and I saw Shure mics in both vids, let's assume the miking is the same. Another known diff is that the Meridians come with UT Pinstripe heads, while the Sats have Emps on them. That alone could account for slightly more sustain from the Sats. However, I do think I heard a low bark from the Sat floor toms that was missing from the Meridians. Subtle, though.

That's the "balls" factor. :D As Gord the Drummer stated in another post, Saturns have 'em, Meridians, while great drums, not so much.

November 19 update

I was informed by the sales guy at the local store that he was told by Mapex that there will be no change in the Saturn's tom mounting ITS system for the next 3 years. There only change will be an upgrade of the current kick pedal.

I own a set of Orions myself, and the thought of buying a set of Meridian ITS mounts, and installing them myself had crossed my mind……..Many have screamed blasphemy at the idea, but I've never been one to care about what others think. ;)

November 22 update:

Ok, I think I'll stick with Saturn after all. Now the colour. Do you think the electric berry burst is a "girly" colour for a 40 years old guy? The wife likes that finish and is recommending that I should get it. What about the new artic white? I like colour myself but I need that will stand out on dark lited stages. any recommendation?

Not girly at all. Like I said to Augie, go for it (set of a different color)! Not everything has to be shades of red or black.

Personally, if it was me, I'd be torn between the Galaxy Burst and the Rootbeer Burst...... But, if I had my way it would be Orions in Cosmic Cloud Burst, I love that one!!
