Keep in mind that I just used two overhead condenser Superlux mics going straight to my MOTU 828 mkII interface (which has the preamp Mic 1 kind of broken making a weird nasty noise. Gotta fix that).
Again. There's no bass drum mic and neither a snare drum mic.
Just a plain stereo recording from behind the drumset with the two Superlux mics.
But it's just to give an idea of the sound.
I recorded it in Logic Pro 8 and used some plug-ins. Adaptive Limiter, EQ and Space Designer.

I’ve recently grabbed a set of Evans G-Plus Clears for my Pro-M in my never-ending quest for the sound and feel I’m looking for.

I’ve gotten great sounds with several models of heads from the throne area, but found out (as many of you have) that great tone and just the right amount of sustain from behind the kit dies rather quickly out front.

One of the first things I found with the G-Plus is that I’ve been spoiled by the easier and more forgiving tuning of a good two-ply head. The heavy single-ply (12 mil thick) tunes like a single-ply – very sensitive to small differences from lug to lug. Once I adapted to the tuning sensitivity and tonal differences – not too bad getting them where I wanted.

Because of the G-Plus sensitivity, the tuning of the reso heads seems to take a larger role in the tone and response of the batter – much more so than the two-plys I’ve gotten used to. This required a little more "back and forth" than I'm accustomed to, but well worth it for the results.

My impression: a hard attack, TONS of tone and a lot of sustain when you make individual hits on a drum. When you play them together like doing pattern triplets, rudiments and fills, the tons of tone becomes this beautifully blended wall of sound and the attack and tone of these heads really stands out well above it.

I got to hear them out front mic’d, and the attack is very sharp and hard. The person hitting them doesn’t hit as hard as I do, so I’m sure I get more tone coming from them than what I was hearing. Basically, the heads sounded exactly like what I wanted them to.

The G-Plus doesn’t tune really low, but the depth is there in their full-range-frequency sound. The lows are in there because of the drum shell construction and dimensions – not because the head is designed to enhance lows and kill highs. I get the sense that these heads give the most accurate representation of what the Pro-M shells sound like than any that I’ve tried to date.

I used the Evans Resonant Glass (7 mil) for the resos because they are supposed to shorten sustain and sharpen attack for better projection. (I wanted them for live rather than studio application). I’m glad I did, because the G-Plus’s have so much sustain on their own that they would probably still be ringing if I’d used the standard G1’s.

For my first time, I have the drums tuned to notes (around the “A” scale), which is also pretty cool. I have instinctively tuned to accurate intervals, but not necessarily to an accurate scale of notes before. I am impressed with the tuning range of the G-Plus while maintaining consistent tone quality. They can go pretty high with out getting boingy and will maintain their tone low right up until they start wrinkling. They also have better stick response than a two-ply, but still not quite as nice as a “normal thickness” singly-ply.

I practiced with them for a week before playing them out for a 5 hour gig and they are holding up nicely, just requiring a few tuning tweaks during the first few days. It’s quite a change from the 2-ply, tone-controlled heads I’ve been using and so far I think I’m liking them a lot.

I'm going to try a set of the "coated" version on my TAMA Swingstars - which have a lot of inherent overtones - and I'll let you know how they do in that situation.

Later, buds.....

As I mentioned in the thread in the M Birch forum, I ordered a 7 piece M Birch set. It should be getting here tomorrow or Friday.

My question is, are they relatively easy to assemble? Obviously I'll have to not only assemble the kit itself but also install the heads and stuff. I'm not a mechanical idiot or anything but I've never assembled a drum set before. I assume it comes with instructions or something? Is it possible to break something? That would be bad

I figure between this forum and Google searches I should be good. I'll have lots of questions though, I'm sure.
This should be interesting.

Was wondering if anyone here ran into this situation. During rehearsals, currently and in the past, I usually mic my drums along with a couple room mic's mainly for quick recording..for critiquing purposes. Sometimes I run my mixer through our PA just to add some sound to my kit..lows and maybe a hint of fx like a hint of reverb, etc. just for a little more studio or ambient sound. The last couple bands I was in seemed like the rest of the band didn't care for it. To me it sounds good. So the band I'm in now, that I formed, ..well..seems I might be running into the same problem. The three of us have been best friends for 20+ years so it wont be a huge issue this time around.. i can just tell them to bite me...but Is it me?...Am I weird?...Is it fair that the guitar players can have every pedal in existence to mimic every little nuance..spend hours on their sound before practice.. but if i slap a tiny little verb on my drums, I get the "looks"?

Anyone else experience this..just wondering.

I ordered a Mapex 10x8 Pro M Tom in Caramel Fade from Mass Music on Dec 31st. What do you all think the likelyhood is that I will receive the tom, seeing the Pro M has been Discontinued. Also, what happens with the lifetime Warranty on the discontinued models? Will they still make them special order? hmmmmm!! I really hope that I got my order in quick enough for them to make it.

Should be interesting to say the least.

Now that I have my beautiful Saturn...you know the story... ... I'd like to know from older Mapex/Saturn users, what's the best way to have my 10" and 12" toms on Cymbal stands (along with the cymbals)?

I really prefer not to use the bass drum tom mounting system.
And it can be removed on the Saturns, right?
I hope.
I don' t like the position the toms get and they don't go as low as I want.

I've read something about it somewhere I forgot.

Anyway... I prefer to have the two toms (or three with a 8", 10 and 12" config) on cymbal stands coming from the side.

I can't figured out on Mapex hardware page which accessories to look for.

Is the AC908 (Cymbal/Tom arm multi-purpose platform) enough for me to accomplish this set up?
It will fit any Mapex stand?

And do I need longer Tom Holders also?
Wich ones?
I saw a few on the site but they have different diameters!
22.2 mm and 25.4 mm.

I saw a documentary on Sabian Cymbals, on the Bravo station, here in Canada last night.
It was the best hour of tv I have seen in a long time!
They interviewed Dom Famularo, Carmine Appice, Chester Thompson, etc., etc.
I was surprised how much of the cymbal making process, is still done by hand.
The Zildjian's seem like a real down to Earth family to work for.

Been lurking for a while and doing research, and finally picked up one of these to replace a custom Keller kit I had made a few years ago:

-----

So far I'm pretty happy with it. Hardware is much better than expected, mounting system works great, very high quality.

I am kind of struggling with the head selection...picked up G2 clears for the 13 and 16 batters, and they are not very good. First time I've ever had an Evans head that wouldn't tune at all. Very dead at low tunings, then completely choked up high. An old coated Emp on the 18 sounded very nice, if quite a bit open, and a completely dead coated Amb on the 13 sounded okay at low volumes. The stock heads actually sounded best so far on the 13, and not bad on the 16 (if a bit thin). So I might try a coated Amb on the 13 and coated Emps on the floors.

Power Center Reverse over Hazy 300 on the snare...sounds better than a few other heads I've tried (stock, coated G2, coated Force X). A bit of a funky overtone going on, but I'm considering swapping the hoops for S-Hoops to dry it out a bit.

Stock kick heads are fantastic...huge kick sound with a ton of boom and volume. Like a subwoofer. It's easily twice as loud as my old Keller 22x17. Quite happy with those, although I might put a small blanket or pillow in the kick and/or put a ported front head on if I every play out live.

Mapex should really offer some merchandising: Tshirts, caps or beanies, stuff like that. I'm deeply convinced there's a market for that, even more because we never had such branded items to wear (except me and few other lucky drummers, mostly from Canada, benefit from Sami's big heart and dedication to make customers happy by giving 'em free shirt upon request)

C'mon Mapex, give us something to proudly wear in clinics and concerts around...

Take a close look at Mapex endorsee Jim Donovan's picture in his bio page. This tom must be a 6" tom, probably custom-made for the artist, because when compairing with my 8" tom, the badge is not that close to the lugs so it pushes me to think it's really a 6" one.

I'd really like to me able to order few "custom" items, even if it takes longer and cost more (i.e. octoban-like effect toms in my Orion matching finish). I can order acrylic ones from few brands out there but they come all black or clear so I pass...

http://usa.mapexdrums.com/artists/bio.asp?ID=27

What do ya think? 6" right? (lets figure the other one is a regular 10x8)
