The hardware store.... My local Ace Hardware sells surgical tubing, but i would go with eBay. You can do so many fun things with surgical tubing, trust me, so i would buy in bulk!!!!

Whoa, there big fella.  Remember this is a drummers' forum.  Those other <ahem> "hobbies" of yours should probably be discussed in a more appropriate venue...  :stirthepot:

LOL!!!!   I was thinking of how i used to make three person slingshots.  Sounds like your a little more creative than I....

Edit-
Actually now that i think about it i see how that could have been taken the wrong way....  Sorry about that.

so if one wanted to try this, where would I get surgical tubing?

I went to a local medical supply store called PMS (yes, that really is their name - Professional Medical Supply).  Wherever you buy it, just make sure it is actual surgical tubing as it needs to provide good shock absorbtion to work.  If anyone ever finds any in black, I would love to find out about it.

Alright despite accidentally making myself sound like a drug addict....   Xsabers here is where I used to buy bulk tubing, its the real deal, comes in black as well as other colors, and is cheap!

However I have a lot of different sizes and lengths left over from various projects (works great for refreshing vehicle weather stripping...)  How much do you want/need be more than happy to just give you some.

Interesting that you found it to sound not good with the loose mounting, and better with the mount on the shell.  Is the sustain and resonance better now?  That kinda runs counter to normal thinking and the reason for suspension mounts.  Thanks for sharing your experience with that.

Yes, the sustain, resonance, and tone are all better now.  Thanks for all of the suggestions, but drilling two holes did not cost me anything.  Also, a tom holder does not weigh as much as a snare stand, so my hardware box is a bit lighter.  Peace and goodwill.
